How Does It Work?

Firstly the patient is given special protective glasses to wear during the treatment. This is purely a precautionary measure. After applying protective cream to the target area, our trained specialist uses a handheld device to emit a low-energy laser on the hair in question. The patient is likely to feel a warming sensation during the procedure, which is completely normal and completely harmless.

In terms of the specifics of the process, the light from the handheld device causes a reaction in the hair follicle which, after repeated treatment, removes the hair root and stops it from regrowing. The treatment is more effective with darker hairs because the laser is more attracted to darker shades. However, laser hair removal can be used to treat all shades of skin and hair.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

It should be noted that it will take several sessions to achieve optimum results. This is because each hair needs to be targeted individually and at the correct stage of its growth.

Before we start the treatment we will make an assessment of how many sessions will be required so that you’re not left in the dark when it comes to the overall cost. The precise number of sessions you will need depends on a wide range of factors including where the target area is, your age, ethnic origin and, as mentioned, your hair colour. We have found that the average patient requires between 6-8 sessions for the most effective results.

How Do I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?

There are some simple precautions to take before, during and after the procedure. Firstly, you shouldn’t shave, pluck or wax the hair in question from a month before your first session. Ideally the hair should be 1-2mm long when we begin the treatment. You should also ensure that you don’t tan in the four weeks prior to laser hair removal. This includes applying fake tan to the target area.

During the course of sessions it’s normal to experience a little bit of tenderness in the affected area, and we will prescribe relevant gels or creams to soothe any potential swelling that may occur. It is also worth remembering that in the 48 hour period after a treatment you should avoid experiences that could heat up the skin, such as saunas, swimming pools, steam rooms, hot showers/baths and intensive exercise. You should also avoid scented lotions and soaps in the same time period.

After our course of treatments has finished, it’s necessary to protect your skin from exposure to the sun by using a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more.
