Fungal nail treatment

Fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) is usually caused by trichophyton rubrum, a dermatophyte that invades the nail bed and underside of the nail plate.

Laser is a good alternative since the oral treatments can cause problems to the liver and the products are difficult to apply. Some fungal nail treatments are only effective in a small percentage of users. The fungal nail treatment of toenail fungus has previously been very difficult due to the location of the fungus both underneath and inside of the nail. A breakthrough happened when the FDA approved a 1064nM nd:yag laser as suitable for treating nail fungus.

If ignored the fungal nail infection on your toe can lead to uncomfortable effects. For instance, the infection can spread vigorously to other parts of the skin and other toe nails. After an extended period of time, the infection can be severe and may hinder proper movement. The infection can cause pain around the toenails.

Following a consultation with our in-house podiatrist to correctly diagnose the condition, patients are referred for a course of laser treatments. More than one treatment session is usually necessary, three sessions being the average number required. If the condition is over five years old, more sessions will be required.

The consultation with a qualified chiropodist is €50, laser sessions are priced at €99 each session, or you can pre-pay a package of 3 treatments for €273.

Dundrum Cosmetic clinic is the only laser clinic in Ireland where nail fungus removal treatments are overseen by a qualified chiropodist on-site in a medical centre.
