The 5 best skin treatments for autumn

To get the most out of a skin treatment, timing is everything. Certain treatments are more effective at certain times of the year because of what your skin goes through during warmer or colder periods of weather.

And so when the colder months of autumn start closing in - after your skin may have suffered during the warm summer weather - it’s often a great time to invest in your skin.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the best treatments to get your skin ready for autumn.

Cosmelan

Why now? Melasma is a skin condition that appears in the form of dark, brown-grey patches on your skin. It could be caused by lots of different factors, but the most common trigger is overexposure to the sun. Of course, that’s more likely to happen by the end of summer.

Autumn is also a good time to tackle melasma because you’re advised to avoid exposure to the sun during cosmelan treatment. That’s made much easier when the sun starts to stay hidden.

My suggestion: Melasma can be a tricky condition to treat. Simple moisturisers are unlikely to work. Instead, you’re likely to need a combination of different treatments.

That’s why I’d always recommend the cosmelan® depigmentation pack as the best treatment for melasma. It contains a mixture of depigmenting peels and creams that, over time, should help to improve the appearance of melasma (and hopefully remove it altogether).

Fractional Laser Resurfacing

Why now? Though laser treatments can be transformative for your skin, they’re also a big commitment. They’re more expensive than creams or peels, you often need some downtime afterwards, and many require you to avoid sun exposure after the treatment.

For this reason, the sun-starved months of autumn could be the ideal time to take the plunge.

My suggestion: When it comes to the best laser skin treatments, my personal recommendation at the moment is the CO2RE laser.

The CO2RE is a fractional laser, which means it only targets tiny fractions of the skin at a time. By doing this, the surrounding skin tissue remains intact. This helps to promote quicker healing and really reduces your downtime after the procedure. It also reduces the risk of side effects such as scarring or hyperpigmentation.

If you want to give your skin a truly transformative experience, now might be the time to invest in a laser treatment like the CO2RE.

Peels

Why now? If you’ve started to notice sun spots, redness or general imperfections on your skin, peels can give your skin a new post-summer lease of life.

One of the best things about peels is their versatility. They’re equally adept at treating wrinkles as they are sun spots, depending on which one you choose. It’s always worth researching the range of different peels available to figure out which is best for your needs.

My suggestion: I find that trichloroacetic (TCA) chemical peels are most effective for treating post-summer skin imperfections. They contain essential amino acids and vitamins for your skin that help to open up clogged pores - which is more likely to happen after warmer weather.

Microneedling

Why now? Another treatment that’s made most effective by avoiding sun exposure afterwards, microneedling works by puncturing microscopic holes in your skin to promote the production of new skin tissue and collagen.

My suggestion: Microneedling is normally performed with a small stylus that punctures these tiny holes in your skin. At Dundrum Clinic we use the Dermapen for microneedling. That’s because its vertical needle movement allows for a more controlled treatment with less trauma to the skin and faster recovery.

You might also consider radiofrequency (RF) microneedling as an alternative - though it’s a little more expensive than the traditional. In this treatment, a radiofrequency gently heats the surface layer of skin before the microneedling takes place. This can improve the effectiveness of the treatment and reduce the risk of side effects.

Deep Pore Cleansing Facial

Why now? The summer months are likely to have left your skin feeling a little dry, which is why autumn is such a good time for a facial.

To get the most from a facial, you may need as much as two weeks’ preparation time - which is probably easier now the busy summer months are over. This option is also the most affordable on this list, which may be a blessing at this time of year.

My suggestion: In autumn, a deep pore cleansing facial can be really effective for your skin. It’s a 7-step treatment which firstly analyses your skin to determine problem areas, before a deep skin cleansing to remove dirt and debris trapped in the pores.

We then exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells from the surface. Finally, we massage your face and apply a customised healing mask.
